Events of "The Signalman" Painting

Before:

  1. A British signalman during the early 19th century begins to see a ghostly apparition calling too him through the red light of the train signal.
  2. Some time later, a tragedy strikes the train coming through the line.
  3. After the events of the first tragedy, the ghost reappears before the Signalman, weeping. Again, after this appearance, a tragedy occurs on the train with the spontaneous death of a young woman, leading the Signalman to believe these are some form of warning for future tragedies.
  4. After having seen the ghost a third time, the now-paranoid Signalman meets a man, the story's narrator, trying to strike up conversation. Initially fearing that this man is none other than the ghost, the Signalman is skeptical.
During:

  1. The Signalman, looking for privacy, invites the man into his now-disheveled home along the rails.
  2. The narrator becomes more and more aware of how disturbed the Signalman is, who is constantly checking outside his window at what seems to be nothing.
  3. The Signalman decides to open up to the narrator and invites the man to return the next day, where he explains his previous encounters with the ghost.
  4. The narrator is skeptical, but can clearly see the Signalman is serious about the situation. As the Signalman continues to frantically look outside the window claiming he sees the red light accompanying the ghost, the narrator sees nothing, and concludes that the Signalman needs psychiatric help.
After:
  1. After some conversation, the narrator convinces the Signalman to receive help, and leaves saying he will return to accompany him to a medical professional.
  2. In the time between his leaving and return, the Signalman sees the ghost calling to him a final time, running out onto the railroad to see it.
  3. This ghost, calling to him in the same way as the first occurrence, turns out to be a man trying to warn the Signalman of a coming train.
  4. The Signalman is killed by the oncoming train, with the narrator returning to the police scene where he hears a recounting of what happened to the Signalman.
